Massage

Massage is seen as an effective method for boosting hair growth, by massaging the scalp. Some say that by massaging the eyelids, you’re also helping to maximise lash growth as it helps to increase blood flow to the roots of your lashes.

Eyelid massage is also effective if you suffer from blepharitis, as it helps to push the oily fluid out of the tiny meibomian glands. It is recommended that you massage along the length of the upper and the lower lids, working towards the eye in sweeping downwards motions, and upwards motions on the lower eyelid. Eyelid massage is therapeutic at the very least, but by helping to keep your eyelids healthy, it can only boost the health of your eyelashes.

Combing

Combing the lashes is said to be a trick for how to grow long eyelashes, but it’s actually unproven and likely to be an old wives tale. The issue with combing your lashes is that you could actually be causing them more harm than good. Eyelashes are fragile and combing can encourage them to fall out, if they’re not naturally ready to fall out. Combing the lashes could also damage the hair shaft, so it’s not a recommended technique for boosting lash growth.

Castor Oil

When searching online for tips on how to grow long eyelashes, almost every post or article will mention castor oil. Castor oil has been recommended for boosting lash growth for a very long time, but believe it or not, it’s not actually scientifically proven to do so.

What even is castor oil? Well it’s a vegetable oil which has been derived from the bean of the castor tree, and the oil contains fatty acids which are believed to be super nourishing to the hair and skin. It’s a common ingredient within many beauty products because it’s said to have a hydrating effect without clogging pores or irritating the skin.

It’s very important you look for pure castor oil if you want to give it a try on your lashes. Some forms of castor oil have been blended with other ingredients which might not be as gentle, and thus could cause irritation.

You can use one of two forms of castor oil for beauty methods – the cold pressed castor oil which is clear, or the Jamaican black castor oil which has a dark brown colour. Both types of castor oil contain the same properties that may make them beneficial to eyelash growth.

Whilst castor oil hasn’t been proven as a bona fide method in growing your eyelashes, it will still help to moisturise the lashes and eyelids which isn’t a bad thing. Its moisturising and conditioning benefits could help to prevent premature lash breakage, and is very viscous formula could make your lashes look thicker.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is a beauty collection staple with many uses and benefits. It has antimicrobial and antifungal properties, and is safe for use around the lashes and eyes. It contains fatty acids, including lauric acid and a study found that applying coconut oil to hair before or after washing protected hair by reducing protein loss.

Applying coconut oil to your eyelashes and the surrounding skin may protect you from skin infections, including folliculitis, which is inflammation of the hair follicles. Whilst there’s no proof that coconut oil can make the lashes grow, it’s still worth trying as it’ll help reduce protein loss and protect the lids and lashes.

Olive Oil

Olive oil is another oil which hasn’t been scientifically proven to make the lashes grow, but it has multiple benefits which help the lashes. Olive oil is known as one of nature’s healing wonders, and is beneficial on both the skin and hair. It’s a natural resource of vitamins and nutrients, all of which are needed for healthy hair growth, and olive oil has a softening effect on the hair shafts. As well as using it as a lash treatment, it works well as a makeup remover too.

Petroleum Jelly

Petroleum Jelly may sound like a strange thing to include within a how to grow long eyelashes round-up, but it features in many similar articles online, so I wanted to include it as I was interested in seeing if it does in fact work. It’s said to be an excellent conditioning and moisturizing treatment for lashes, however it won’t make your eyelashes grow. It will however work effectively at preventing dry, brittle lashes as it has great emollient properties which is why it’s so effective at soothing chapped lips.

There are many different products which have been specifically created to boost eyelash growth, but these are more natural alternatives you can try.
