Right now there’s a massive emphasis on eco-friendly beauty swaps and reusable cotton pads are an extremely easy swap to make, which makes a big difference.
Reusable cotton pads can be used for makeup removal, nail polish removal and the application of skincare, and instead of just throwing your cotton pads into the bin, you can throw them in your washing machine to clean them so you can use them again.
What’s wrong with conventional cotton pads?
There’s numerous reasons why cotton pads are said to be bad for the environment, which is down to the manufacture of cotton pads as well as what happens to them once they’ve been used. Cotton is a renewable source, but it can take upto 20,000 litres of water to produce 1kg of cotton.
1kg of cotton is the amount you’d need to make just one t-shirt or about 15-20 packs of cotton rounds, and if you imagine how many cotton pads you use in your beauty routine, that’s a massive amount of water.
In addition to the water issues, there’s also concerns with the bleaching process used to make cotton pads, and they don’t biodegrade easily.
If you’re looking for some reusable cotton pads to reduce your usage of conventional cotton pads, there are lots of places you can find them. Amazon is a great option, and there literally are hundreds to choose from.
I’d recommend looking for a set of reusable cotton pads which come with a laundry bag, as that’ll enable you to keep them together whilst washing them in the washing machine. You can handwash the cotton pads, but I personally prefer using my washing machine to ensure they’re thoroughly cleansed and sanitized.
The Bamboo Spaces Cotton Rounds are £9.99, and they contain 20 reusable cotton pads, with a net laundry bag. They’re nicely stitched around the outside, and are described as having soft bamboo valour. Each of these cotton pads are 8 cm in size, meaning they’ll work nicely for the skin and nails.
Revolution Skincare Reusable Makeup Removal Pads are a relatively new launch, and are £8. They include seven white stitched white pads with a white net laundry bag. They don’t look like the best quality compared to the Amazon version, but they’re easily accessible and give you a pad for each day of the week.
The last of my reusable cotton pads recommendations are the Holland & Barrett Thick Cotton Pads which are also £8. They come with six reusable organic pads with a drawstring laundry bag. These are really lovely, thick cotton pads which are said to be suitable for micellar water or facial cleansers to completely remove your makeup.
